Housing placements increased; chronic homelessness decreased in mid-2024

From January 1 to June 30, 2024, 579 clients moved into housing from HELP shelters (excluding assessment and sanctuary sites) – a 3% increase compared to mid-2023 (brief). Increases also occurred among  placements from shelters under the jurisdiction of NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) shelters (7%);  placements that occurred in all of our shelters with  a public rental subsidy (“subsidized placements”) (6%); and subsidized placements from DHS shelters (15%).

Our analysis also shows that the recent focus of single adult and family shelter programs on “placing” chronically homeless led to a 16% decline from 2022 to 2023 and a 13% decline from 2023 to 2024.
