HELP USA Increases Housing Placements for the Fifth Consecutive Year

For the fifth year, HELP USA has increased the number of housing placements for families and single adults into permanent homes. In 2024 alone, HELP USA achieved 1,314 successful housing placements, surpassing the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) goals despite ongoing systemic challenges.

A critical barrier to ending homelessness is the severe shortage of affordable housing, which leaves countless individuals and families struggling to find stable homes. “There are many reasons people become homeless, but the most glaring reason why they remain homeless is that there isn’t any housing they can afford. Without a significant increase in affordable housing options, the road to stability remains out of reach for far too many people,” said Dan Lehman, President and CEO of HELP USA.

This shortage is compounded by a slow and complex Human Resources Administration (HRA) approval process. This delays access to housing vouchers that help cover rent costs for low-income households. These obstacles keep many in shelters longer than necessary, preventing timely transitions to permanent housing.

Housing Shortage: The Root of the Crisis

The growing demand for affordable housing far outpaces supply, leaving thousands waiting for permanent homes. HELP USA collaborates with city officials, policymakers, and housing advocates to expand housing access, streamline placements, and generate new opportunities. To address these issues, HELP will convene industry experts at its 3rd Annual Upstream Symposium on April 30th to discuss solutions that increase housing supply, improve voucher access, and create equitable opportunities.

Sustained Growth in Placements

HELP USA’s placements continue to rise year over year:

· 2022: 1,035 placements

· 2023: 1,233 placements

· 2024: 1,314 placements

This steady growth reflects the dedication and strategic approach of HELP USA’s housing teams, who remain relentless in securing stable homes for those in need.

Industry-Wide Performance Improvement

HELP USA’s impact is evident in its rising rank among NYC DHS-contracted shelter providers. Ranking in the top tier of all providers – both for adults and families with children – HELP has seen its performance improve consistently by emphasizing subsidized placements which have far higher rates of long-term housing stability. These advancements underscore the effectiveness of HELP’s housing-first approach.

Keys to Success: Leadership, Tenacity, and Collaboration

Nicole Richards, Senior Vice President of Single Adult Services, emphasized the commitment of the site teams as key to sustaining HELP USA’s success. “The staff is laser-focused on seeing each client through to stable housing. It is not just about numbers—it is about people, about ensuring that no one falls through the cracks. The persistence and dedication of our teams have made all the difference.”

Strong broker relationships, inter-site collaboration, and proactive client engagement drive HELP USA’s success. Teams communicate closely with brokers to expedite placements, ensuring no opportunity is wasted. Clients receive clear, practical guidance about navigating the housing market, empowering them to make informed decisions. These combined efforts continue to strengthen HELP USA’s impact.

Looking Ahead

HELP USA remains committed to ending homelessness and will continue pushing for greater housing placement success in 2025 and beyond. By prioritizing collaboration, data-driven strategy, and relentless advocacy, HELP USA ensures more individuals and families find stability and opportunity through permanent housing. The numbers tell a powerful story, but the real impact is seen in the transformed lives—one successful housing placement at a time.
