On March 24, HELP USA, in partnership with the New York City Department of Social Services and Camber Property Group, celebrated the ribbon-cutting of HELP Women’s Center in East New York.
HELP Women’s Center is New York City’s first purpose-built intake and assessment center for women entering shelter. The five-story, 60,000-square-foot facility will serve up to 200 women and reflects a more thoughtful, person-centered approach to how women enter the shelter system.
The building was designed using trauma-informed principles to support safety, dignity, and clarity from the moment someone walks in. Features include semi-private sleeping areas, access to natural light, clear sightlines, and spaces that allow for both privacy and connection. The center also includes an on-site medical clinic, dining and recreation areas, and dedicated space for services and support.
A mural by artist Shantell Martin anchors the space, adding a sense of calm and reflection as women enter.
The project was developed by Camber Property Group; built by Fifth Avenue Builders, a joint venture with Urban Atelier Group; and designed by Curtis + Ginsberg Architects in collaboration with HELP USA. Additional partners include HELP Development Corporation, AKRF, Skyline Engineering, and NV5. Financing was provided by Citi Community Capital and Sun Life U.S.
The ribbon-cutting brought together city leaders, partners, and community members to mark this milestone and reflect a shared commitment to improving how women are welcomed into care.
