HELP USA Co-hosts Stalking Training in Harlem

13:47PM on June 14 2010
On June 10, 2010, HELP, in collaboration with the Upper Manhattan Domestic Violence Collaborative Project, co-hosted a training entitled, "The Diverse Faces of Stalking" at the Adam Clayton State Office Building in Harlem. The training focused on the issue of stalking, with a special emphasis on disabled victims of stalking and domestic violence. The training, attended by 140 members of the community including service providers, consumers, and government agencies, was interpreted in Spanish and American Sign Language. Rachel Chazin Halperin, Executive Director of Domestic Violence Programs at HELP USA presented on the use of technology and stalking.

Ever year, 3.4 million adults are victims of stalking in the United States. 1 out of every 12 women and 1 out of every 45 men in the U.S. has been stalked at some point. 59% of female stalking victims are stalked by a current or former intimate partner. Moreover, in2009, intimate partner violence was the leading cause of homicide for women in New York.

HELP joined the Upper Manhattan Domestic Violence Collaborative Project in 2008. The Collaborative is a partnership of 12 community based health, social, legal services and law enforcement agencies dedicated to providing linguistically appropriate civil legal assistance, clinical and supportive services to victims of domestic violence residing in Upper Manhattan through the delivery of coordinated interdisciplinary intervention strategies.
