Services for Veterans
HELP’s holistic approach of providing safe, quality housing, on-site professional case management, day care, and employment and counseling services is a proven resource for homeless and at-risk veterans, male or female. For the past 25 years, HELP USA has developed and implemented new and innovative approaches to helping the homeless and other populations in need, playing a leadership role in homelessness prevention and family stabilization. HELP’s program model for veterans’ services reflects our ongoing commitment to build better lives. We use our model to encourage veterans to rebuild their lives and gain self-sufficiency for their families.
Supportive housing models that link tenants to community-based service networks and offer wraparound services have been proven an effective tool in helping tenants remain stable in their housing and assisting them in rebuilding their lives. Through strong collaborative community partnerships with the Department of Veteran Affairs, local hospitals and community-based providers, including an innovative collaboration with the Veterans Affairs Southern Nevada Health Care System and its Community Based Outreach Clinic, HELP USA is able to provide homeless veterans with priority access to a broad spectrum of critical services and resources. Services and resources leveraged through our community partnerships include: alcohol and drug dependence treatment; full medical and dental services; vocational rehabilitation assistance; comprehensive mental health services; and readjustment counseling. Other services provided onsite and through community collaborations include: food and nutritional services, computer classes, job skills training, money management training, housing stability services, and workshops on housing rights.
Additionally, HELP has developed strong partnerships with field VA offices in the Northeast and Southwest which benefit veteran residents by providing the maximum coordinated services available. HELP case managers act as advocates and mentors for veterans, assisting them develop and maintain their self-sufficiency, benefits, healthcare, mental health and family relations.
Veterans Employment and Life Skills Programs
HELP USA believes that those who are returning from service overseas, as well as their family members, face significant challenges as they transition to life back at home. Currently, the unemployment rate for veterans is 11.3% and there are 185,000 veterans out of work.# The “rucksack” of employment training, support services and life skills programs that HELP provides to assist veterans and their families with the transition back from war, includes financial literacy, employment services/job training, job placement and retention, educational and psychological counseling, family stabilization services, case management, educational and psychological counseling, health service coordination, and day care and mentoring programs for children. The programs assist returned or returning military personnel as they face the challenging task of reintegrating into civilian life.
For the past 23 years, HELP USA has developed and implemented new and innovative approaches to helping the homeless and other populations in need, playing a leadership role in homeless prevention and family stabilization. HELP’s programs for veterans’ reflect this same commitment to building better lives.
Fresh Start for Veterans
The Fresh Start program for veterans is a unique and holistic model of housing, counseling and employment services for veterans residing in HELP USA's residences and graduates of HELP programs. HELP USA’s Fresh Start for veterans provides a supportive peer forum for Veterans dealing with the complex and often difficult transition to civilian life. The VA reports that veterans thrive when close connections are nurtured with other veterans. In the Fresh Start program, the shared bond of their service experience provides a deep trust from which a healing and empowering dynamic forms. Mental health services and counseling are integrated with housing and employment to meet the special needs of veterans. Career development counseling provides opportunities for veterans to consider new vocations and a variety of job training initiatives help veterans develop new skills and increase confidence.
As veterans engage in this process of work readiness and interviewing with prospective employers, they are supported by a community of veterans who have graduated from the Fresh Start program and are gainfully employed. In supportive group counseling sessions monitored by clinical psychologists, participants share their experiences and challenges. Graduates report increased self-esteem and confidence as a result of the peer support.
