In 1992, in response to the glaring need for both affordable housing and community revitalization, HELP USA created the Genesis model, a permanent service-enriched housing model for formerly homeless, low income, and special needs households. Each of HELP USA's permanent housing projects offers a combination of affordable housing, community and program space, and on-site service coordination to assist tenants in accessing community-based resources. The first two Genesis projects - Genesis Homes in East New York, Brooklyn (150 units) and Genesis Apartments in Union Square, Manhattan (94 units), were designed to serve formerly homeless and low-income families. To date, HELP USA has developed more than 600 units of permanent, service enriched housing for a range of special needs populations - including victims of domestic violence and homeless veterans - as well as affordable housing for working families. HELP USA now operates permanent housing in New York City, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Houston, and Las Vegas, with additional projects in development in Newark, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
